Imani Thomas, nominated by Riverhead CAP. She is an active member of the Riverhead Youth Coalition, Riverhead CAP’s Peer Leadership Program, Riverhead High School Student Government, and is the Treasurer of the Class of 2021. In April 2019 she was named Member of the Month by the Riverhead Community Coalition for Safe and Drug-Free Youth.
As a dedicated member of the Riverhead Coalition for the past four years, Imani has been a driving force in the implementation of coalition strategies that focus on preventing and reducing youth use of alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana, and vaping. She was selected to participate in a Youth Focus Group with Legislators Krupski and Fleming last year. She was also a lead presenter to speak in front of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Health Committee in June 2019. This presentation focused on reducing use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) through a population-level approach and contributed to the committee’s focus on restricting vapes in Suffolk County. Imani now plays an integral role in training younger members to write and record Public Service Announcements, creating and delivering community-based presentations, and partnering with coalition staff and the Riverhead Police Department to facilitate Medication Take Back Days.
