Southampton – Supervisor Maria Moore is announcing the twelfth year of the Town of Southampton's Landmarks Maintenance Program Award. The Award Program supports matching contributions from owners for projects that help the preservation and long-term sustainability of properties designated as a Town Landmark. The program is funded by developer contributions to a dedicated historical preservation benefit fund.

The deadline for applications is Friday, April 30, 2026.

“Through the Landmarks Maintenance Award Program, the Town supports continued protection and preservation of important structures where financial pressures exist for owners” said Supervisor Moore. “Historic homes and buildings are an important part of the character of the Town of Southampton.”

In past years, matching dollar awards have been made to designated Town Landmarks in Water Mill, East Quogue, Shinnecock Hills, Remsenburg, Westhampton and Hampton Bays that applied for a variety of exterior maintenance conditions." according to Vicki Kahn, a Member and Coordinator for the Landmarks & Historic Districts Board. She noted projects for application may include exterior rehabilitation; structural stabilization; window replacements, door and shutter restoration; and the resolution of water-penetration issues.

To be eligible for the award, an historic resource must already have been designated a Town landmark. Excepting not-or-profit owners, owner-applicants are also required to have Basic or Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) status. The work is expected to be completed in a year and, when completed, documented by a Landmarks & Historic Districts Board member.

“This is an incentive to owners of historic resources to seek landmark designation. In addition to the maintenance award, local Town Landmarks are also eligible for a NY State tax abatement program for qualifying improvements and also the possible sale of an historic preservation easement to the Town,” according to Ms. Kahn.

The Town of Southampton Youth Bureau participated in the 90th Annual YMCA Youth and Government Conference, held March 20 - 22, 2026 in Albany, NY. The Youth Bureau’s delegation, comprised of thirty students from Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays, Pierson, and Southampton High Schools, spent the past six months researching real-world issues and writing their own bills to propose changes to New York State law. 

The YMCA Youth and Government program is a statewide educational program that gives students the opportunity to experience how government works by taking on the roles of lawmakers, debating issues, and voting on legislation. 

At the conference, students represented the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau by presenting and debating their bills in committee hearing rooms and in the chambers of the New York State Assembly. The delegation submitted seven bills which included Bill #10, Bill #26, Bill #47, Bill #55, Bill #64, Bill #86, and Bill #96, and all seven successfully passed in their respective chambers. Notably, Bill #10, which focused on setting standards for water usage by artificial intelligence data centers, passed unanimously. 

The student-written legislation addressed a range of important topics, including regulating artificial intelligence in political advertising (Bill #26), recognizing lifeguards as first responders (Bill #47), requiring attorneys to complete pro bono work (Bill #55), increasing employee representation on corporate boards (Bill #64), allowing high school students mental health days (Bill #86), and reducing out-of-pocket costs for Alzheimer’s medications (Bill #96). 

Five bills earned the “Seal of State Approval,” a distinction recognizing excellence in research, organization, and clarity in legislative writing. In addition, Bill #55 and Bill #64 ranked among the top 10 bills in committees, while Bill #10 and Bill #96 were endorsed by the Youth Governor. 

As part of the broader Youth and Government experience, students also participated in a service-learning initiative that emphasizes community involvement and civic engagement. Throughout the program, students tracked both their community service contributions and their civic learning efforts, earning credits for their participation. At the conference, several Town of Southampton Youth Bureau delegates were recognized with commemorative pins for achieving the highest levels of service and engagement, highlighting their commitment not only to leadership in government, but also to making a positive impact in their communities. 

Students were also recognized for their individual achievements. Clare Loesch was named Outstanding Delegate, while Kannon Davis, Casey Farrell, and Sebastian Rivera were recognized as Best Debaters. Allie Barry and Casey Farrell were nominated to attend the Conference on National Affairs (CONA), a national YMCA program where top student delegates from across the country present and debate legislation. Casey Farrell was also elected Deputy Speaker of Freedom Assembly for next year’s conference. 

“This year was not only the largest YMCA Youth and Government conference in New York State, but also the largest delegation in the history of the Town of Southampton’s program,” stated Peter Strecker, Program Coordinator and Assistant Director of the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau. “Our students demonstrated strong research, confidence in debate, and a commitment to developing practical solutions to real-world issues. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and how well they represented our Southampton Town community.”

The Town of Southampton Office of Emergency Management is continuing to monitor the ongoing concerns of potential Avian Influenza in wild birds. Although the CDC has indicated that recent detections in birds pose low risks to the public, residents are urged to use caution when dealing with wildlife; the virus is widespread in wild birds and mammals. The virus can, and will transmit to domestic animals, so pet owners are urged to keep their domestic animals supervised and away from any wild birds, dead wildlife, or bird/animal carcasses.  

If removal of carcasses is deemed necessary, the public is reminded to wear disposable gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Avoid direct contact with the carcass or carcass fluids by using a shovel and washing hands and clothing immediately after with soap and hot water. Carcasses should be triple bagged (garbage or contractor bags) and placed in an outdoor trash receptacle.

BRUSH AMNESTY PROGRAM - SPRING 2026

Waste Management will accept brush brought to the transfer stations by residential self-haulers at no cost April 15 – May 31. Branches and/or twigs less than 3” in diameter may be brought to these transfer stations:

Hampton Bays: 7 days a week, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

North Sea: 7 days a week, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Westhampton: 6 days a week, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm (closed Wednesdays)

(Please note: Brush/Leaves are NOT accepted at Sag Harbor Transfer Station.)

Please keep brush separate from leaves. Only brush-filled biodegradable bags will be accepted. Residents using plastic bags to transport brush will be asked to open them upon arrival.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED TO DISPOSE. Part-time residents may participate in the program. If your driver’s license shows an out-of-town primary address or a P.O. Box, please bring a utility bill showing a physical address in the Town of Southampton.

Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara announced today that it is once again time to register to participate in the Great East End Clean-Up, which will take place on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.

The Great East End Clean-Up is a volunteer-based program to remove litter and debris from public areas throughout Southampton Town.  Last year over 550 volunteers removed 7.76 tons of garbage and bulk items (furniture) from our beaches, parks, trails, and roadsides.

“The Great East End Clean-Up has become an annual event in our Town and I look forward to continuing the tradition,” said Councilwoman McNamara.  “We live in a special place and the volunteers from the community really do make a difference.”

If you would like to participate, just select an area of public property such as a park, beach, trail, or roadside that is in need of cleaning and complete the registration form online by Wednesday, April 22. Individuals as well as groups are welcome to sign up.

New this year, we have partnered with HUGS and the SAFE in Southampton Coalition to hand out Deterra Drug Disposal Pouches with your clean-up supplies.  The Deterra Pouches are a safe and easy way to dispose of unused or expired household medicines.

The Southampton Town Highway Dept., led by Superintendent Charles McArdle, announces the 2026 Spring Leaf Cleanup, April 13–May 29. Place bagged leaves and brush curbside starting April 6 and follow all collection guidelines.

Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara announced today the April 20 deadline to order banners for the 2026 “Hometown Heroes Banner Program.”  The initiative, spearheaded in 2023 by Councilwoman McNamara and Westhampton VFW Post 5350, aims to recognize and honor our local military men and women by displaying personalized banners with their picture and military service information in Good Ground Park in Hampton Bays. 

“I’m proud to partner once again with the Westhampton VFW Post 5350 on the banner program,” said Councilwoman McNamara, liaison to the Veterans Affairs Committee.  “It’s important for us to honor and recognize those in our community who have served and continue to serve our nation.”

2026 Banner applications are now being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with one banner per sponsor. To qualify, either honorees or sponsors must live or have lived in the Town of Southampton, and honorees must be serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The cost of the eighteen by thirty-six-inch banner will be $150, with a portion of the proceeds to be administered by Westhampton VFW Post 5350 to benefit local veterans’ organizations or to assist families with a banner purchase.

The program will run from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. At the end of the program period, program sponsors will be able to pick up their banner at the Housing and Community Services Department located at 240 W. At the Southampton Town Board Meeting held on March 10, 2026, the Town Board voted unanimously to approve new legislation aimed at addressing blighted and abandoned properties. The initiative, put forth by Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, establishes a Vacant Building Registry to enhance community safety and preserve neighborhood character.

Under the new law, owners of every vacant building within the Town are now required to:

• Register the property with the Town.
• Pay a designated registration fee, with an escalating yearly maintenance fee.
• Maintain liability insurance for the property.
• Submit a detailed long-term plan, either rehabilitation or demolition, for the property.

“These blighted properties are not only an eyesore for the neighbors, they are a danger to first responders who may be called in the event of a fire or medical emergency,” stated Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara. “They are putting a strain on Town resources. Now fees will be imposed on property owners who are using the most services.”

The legislation also mandates annual inspections for these properties to ensure they do not become hazards to the public or emergency personnel. By holding property owners accountable, the Town aims to transform neglected sites back into productive assets for the community.

Ryan Murphy, Town Code Compliance & Emergency Management Administrator, stated, “Ongoing vacancy and progressive dilapidation should not be just the cost of doing business for property owners. This Code increases accountability for those behaviors and ensures that public safety and emergency services agencies have the information needed to safely and effectively manage any issues that may arise at vacant properties.“

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — At the March 10th Town Board Meeting, the Southampton Town Board, led by Councilmember Michael Iasilli, passed an update to the Community Preservation Fund (CPF) Water Quality Improvement Project Plan. The proposed resolution, RES 2026-0565, expands priority area maps to follow Suffolk County standards, significantly increasing the number of residents eligible for Innovative and Alternative (I/A) sanitary system grant funding. The proposal has unanimous support from the Board. 

The initiative stems from a 2015 state legislative amendment that allows the Town to utilize up to 20% of annual CPF revenues for Water Quality Improvement Projects. Since the program’s inception following a 2016 public referendum, the Town has remained committed to upgrading local infrastructure to protect its vital water resources. Additionally, with the passage of the Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Act in 2024, this update helps to keep the Town in line with efforts to modernize wastewater infrastructure and reduce nitrogen pollution on a more streamlined scale. 

Significantly, this new framework abolishes the previous two-tier system, which often resulted in a separate distribution of resources. Under the former structure, certain geographical areas were designated for prioritization, allowing projects within those zones to receive faster review and funding allocation. Conversely, projects in non-prioritized areas were frequently subjected to a lengthy process, often delaying water quality improvements.

The revised program establishes a single, unified priority zone. This fundamental change ensures that all qualifying projects, regardless of their specific location within the program's jurisdiction, are evaluated against the same criteria. The objective is to foster equitable access to grant funds and accelerate the implementation of projects. 

“This is a critically important step toward nitrogen reduction and improving water quality for more people in the town," said Councilmember Michael Iasilli, the lead sponsor of the resolution who also serves as the Local Government Committee Chair of Peconic Estuary Partnership. "More so, we are now able to provide greater grant funding opportunities to residents seeking to upgrade outdated septic systems. A special thanks to Planning Administrator Scherer and CPF Director Fenlon for coordinating and working together on this crucial update,” he said. 

The proposed update was developed with input from water quality improvement advocates and through a collaborative effort between the Department of Land Management, the CPF Department, the Water Quality Advisory Committee, and the Town’s GIS Manager. By expanding the priority area maps, the Town now aims to address nitrogen loading more aggressively across a broader geographic range.

We will assess any possible impacts to Tuesday operations as we work through the storm tomorrow; ensuring public safety is our number one priority,” Moore went on to say.“The Town’s Emergency Operation Center will be open as of this evening and will be monitoring storm conditions,” said Town Emergency Manager Ryan Murphy. “All residents are urged to stay off the roads and avoid travelling during the storm. Conditions outside are expected to deteriorate rapidly and there is a blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service,” Murphy said. Murphy also encouraged residents to sign up for Town alerts via Notify Me on the Town’s website, as well as to stay tuned to the Town’s social media for updates, information and winter weather tips.

In response to the severe winter weather experienced this year, the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of Southampton have declared an ice emergency for town waters; this declaration is for the purpose of advising residents that they should take steps to see that pilings and other marine structures do not become a hazard to navigation once the ice has thawed and the waters become navigable once again.

Residents who have permits for marine structures that have become damaged or set free due to the ice will be permitted to apply for an expedited permit to repair or replace them.

The project will involve abatement and painting of the steel and concrete elements of both bridges. Full-lane closures beneath the active work area will be required; however, only one bridge will be worked on at a time, with the Main Street Bridge scheduled first. Detours will be clearly posted to guide motorists around the work zones and to maintain access to and from the Southampton Station.

Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara announced the launch of the 2026 “Hometown Heroes Banner Program.”   The initiative, spearheaded in 2023 by Councilwoman McNamara and Westhampton VFW Post 5350, aims to recognize and honor our local military men and women by displaying personalized banners with their picture and military service information in Good Ground Park in Hampton Bays. Over 50 local heroes have been honored since the launch of the program, from WWII veterans to current active military.

“I’m proud to once again partner with the Westhampton VFW Post 5350 on this program,” said Councilwoman McNamara, liaison to the Veterans Affairs Committee.  “It’s important for us to recognize and remember the sacrifices made by those in our community who have served, and continue to serve our nation.”

2026 Banner applications are open on a first-come, first-served basis, with one banner per sponsor. To qualify, honorees or sponsors must be a former or current resident of the Town of Southampton, and honorees must be serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The cost of the eighteen by thirty-six-inch banner will be $150, with a portion of the proceeds to be administered by Westhampton VFW Post 5350 to benefit local veterans’ organizations or to assist families with a banner purchase.

The program will run from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. At the end of the program period, program sponsors will be able to pick up their banner at the Housing and Community Services Department located at 240 W. Town Awarded Maximum Grant for Hampton West Park

$675K from NY State Will Fund New Courts, Equipment, & Improved Access

Southampton Town’s plan for a revitalized Hampton West Park has reached a critical funding milestone as local officials announced today the arrival of hundreds of thousands in long-awaited state funds.

Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore reported that the Town has been awarded $675,000—the maximum amount possible—from New York’s Office of Parks, Recreation, & Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and its Environmental Protection Fund (EPF).

“This funding represents an important milestone in our plan to upgrade Hampton West Park,” said Supervisor Moore. “The grant can cover up to 50 percent of eligible project costs on a reimbursement basis. With approximately $1.87 million budgeted for improvements in this year’s capital plan, the Town is prepared to advance the project with all required funds in place.” 

Located at 700 Stewart Avenue in Westhampton, across from Suffolk County’s Gabreski Airport, Hampton West Park has been a favorite facility for communities on the South Fork. The 15-acre site currently features a playground, two basketball courts, two asphalt tennis courts, a turf baseball/softball field, four pickleball courts, a multipurpose grass field, and a small parking lot. Moore, who previously served as Mayor of nearby Westhampton Beach Village, noted that the park is home to several local Little League and youth soccer clubs.

The existing park was deeded to Southampton Town in 1983, with the original courts being constructed sometime in 1978. The facility’s limited changes since then have included several resurfacings, and a restriping of two original tennis courts to create basketball courts. In 2022 and 2023, at the request of community members, the Town did so with two other tennis courts to convert them to pickleball use, one of the fastest-growing athletic pursuits in the country.

Over the course of 2026, the Southampton Town Parks and Recreation Department aims to replace the existing basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts. Upgrades will include new surfacing, fencing, equipment, and the latest in “accessible design” elements. The project will address safety, accessibility, and recreational needs for local residents—including disadvantaged communities—and ensure that “this essential resource will remain available for all members of the public.”

“This grant will go a long way to help rebuild the aged sports courts and provide enhanced accessibility at this well-utilized community park,” said Parks Director Kristen Doulos. “We expect to complete the work by the end of 2026.”

Overall, New York State’s OPRHP is dedicating up to $26 million to parks, historic preservation, and heritage areas through the EPF program. Its matching grants can be used for the acquisition, development, and improvement of parkland and historic properties listed on the National or State Registers of Historic Places, and heritage areas identified in plans for statutorily designated Heritage Areas. Funds are available to municipalities and not-for-profits with an ownership interest.

Although the forecast confidence is still uncertain for this coming weekend, the Town of Southampton is monitoring and preparing for the possibility of more snow.

The Southampton Town Highway Department manages and maintains more than 450 miles of roadway within the Town of Southampton. “We have a lot of mileage of roadway to clear and snow to move when a winter storm hits. Our dedicated crews work tirelessly to try to keep the roadways as safe and open as possible for the residents of the Town,” said Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle. “We anticipated the salt use from this last storm and have already restocked due to pre-scheduled deliveries. We are also making sure all of our equipment is ready to go,” McArdle said.

The National Weather Service has indicated that there is about a 50% chance of snow again this coming weekend with the arrival of another coastal storm system. Currently the likelihood of seeing snow again would be late Saturday and Sunday. Some forecasts are indicating that we could get another 5 inches or so. “We regularly monitor weather forecasts in the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management,” said Town Emergency Manager, Ryan Murphy. “Unfortunately, there has been a lot to monitor in the last few weeks as nature seems to be making up for the last few years of relatively calm winters,” Murphy said.

In the days following the storm, there has still been ongoing cleanup activities occurring. There have been many calls from residents concerned with the placement of snow near street corners and other key locations by neighbors. High piled snow in areas can reduce visibility and cause hazardous conditions. All residents and businesses are urged to make sure they are not pushing snow into the roadways or piling it in such a way that it may cause traffic hazards.

Deputy Highway Superintendent Marc Braeger also provided some advice for residents in saying, “Our crews will make multiple passes during a storm, especially one as big as what we experienced this past weekend. Consider waiting until later in the storm to shovel the end of the driveway if you know you don’t have to be anywhere. We hate to see people frustrated when the plow comes by after they have shoveled, so if you wait, your work won’t be undone so quickly by our efforts to clear the roads.”

If we have snow again this weekend, all residents are once again urged to stay off the roads make sure vehicles are out of the roadways, and avoid travelling during any snow. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for Town weather and emergency alerts via Notify Me on the Town’s website, as well as to stay tuned to the Town’s social media for updates, information and winter weather tips.

National Grid will begin construction within the right-of-way (ROW) at the intersection of Montauk Highway and West Gate Road on Tuesday, January 28.

Declaration of a State of Emergency and associated Emergency Orders for the Town of Southampton due to the expected winter storm.

The winter storm is expected to impact the Town of Southampton and cause significant snowfall, wind and cold conditions that will create hazardous conditions within the Town.

In an effort to direct all necessary resources to snow plowing and snow removal operations, and to discourage drivers from being out on the roadways during the storm, all Town facilities normally open on Sundays will be closed effective 5:00AM when the precipitation associated with this storm is anticipated to begin.  Essential employees involved with storm response and public safety will still be performing their necessary operational roles during this time that other facilities are closed. 

The Town will be monitoring the storm and all response efforts and will be evaluating any impacts to the Town’s normal weekday operations during the day tomorrow.  Any alterations to Monday facility openings will be communicated to the public via Notify Me, the Town website, social media, and additional releases. 

Councilmembers Cyndi McNamara and Michael Iasilli, along with the Town of Southampton Veterans Affairs Committee and the Southampton Animal Shelter kicked off the “Help Vets with Pets” pet food drive at a Press Conference held Tuesday, January 20th, at the American Legion in Hampton Bays. The initiative aims to connect local veterans and active military to the Animal Shelter and invite the community to support them by donating food and supplies for their pets.

Councilwoman McNamara, liaison to the Veteran Affairs Committee, who brought her puppy, Indy, to the event, stated, “Whether it’s volunteering at the shelter, or having their own pet, we want to make sure that veterans understand that there are resources available for them.”

Councilmember Iasilli, liaison to the Southampton Animal Shelter, commented, “We are joining forces to address the needs of the veterans. We’re restoring a sense of purpose and a sense of belonging, not just for our pets who are in need, but for veterans who need companions. We’re collecting donations, so veterans in need can provide for their pets.”

“This is a great program to help veterans, who may decide not to feed themselves because they need to feed their dog,” said Bill Hughes, Commander of VFW Post 5350 and Chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee. “We’re grateful for this initiative.”

Rich Steiber, past Commander of the American Legion in Hampton Bays reminded everyone not to forget the cats. He stated, “They are a member of the family as well, whether it’s a dog or a cat, it would be nice to assist the veterans in feeding their other family members with four legs.”

“Those who served our country shouldn’t have to choose between caring for themselves or caring for their pets,” said Chris Teakle, Executive Director of the Southampton Animal Shelter. “A pet is like a family member – it provides comfort, companionship and stability, so through this food drive, our shelter and our community are coming together to give back to the people who have done so much for us.”

Pet food, seed mixes, and pet treats can be dropped off at the following locations in the Town, from now until February 20.

On December 9th, the Board unanimously adopted a measure that would provide CHF funding to Luv Michael, a nonprofit organization dedicated to housing individuals on the spectrum and providing professional and educational opportunities. 

The measure, sponsored by Councilmember Michael Iasilli, who is liaison to the Town’s Disability Advisory Taskforce, was before the CHF Advisory Board for the last couple of years. Through extensive consideration, the application eventually moved to the Town Board. Within the CHF law, which was put together by the Town’s Housing Director Kara Bak, there are provisions allowing for CHF expenditures for disability housing. According to U.S. Health and Human Services, autism prevalence in the U.S. has increased from 1 in 36 children to 1 in 31. The need couldn’t be more relevant today. 

Councilmember Iasilli noted, "I was elated that the entire Town Board supported the CHF application for Luv Michael. The $630,000 will go toward paying down an existing mortgage on one of the properties belonging to the non-profit organization. More specifically, it will allow Luv Michael to continue to provide revolutionary care and services for those living on the spectrum. Not only am I proud to be the lead sponsor on this legislation, but I also commend the work Luv Michael has done. And this effort, in partnership with our municipality, may serve as a model for so many organizations and municipalities in the future who aim to assist people with disabilities."

At the December 9, 2025, Town Board Meeting, the Southampton Town Board unanimously approved legislation to establish a floating zone known as the Community Housing Fund Overlay District (CHOD). The legislation put forth by Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara is designed to streamline the approval process for affordable housing projects.

The CHOD aims to better utilize the Community Housing Fund (CHF) and reduce barriers to affordable housing for local workers, community contributors, and seniors, while maintaining community character and natural resources.  Unlike traditional zoning, which assigns specific land uses to designated areas, a floating zone is defined in the code but not yet applied to a particular location; it is only implemented when a specific project is approved.

Councilwoman McNamara stated, “With nearly 70 units of housing in the queue that don’t fit traditional zoning but have broad community support, the need for this zoning tool became apparent. This legislation will positively impact residents for generations to come, and I want to thank our Town Planning and Development Administrator, Janice Scherer for drafting it. I look forward to creating affordable opportunities for home ownership and rentals in our Town.”

“Providing a planning tool to reduce barriers to affordable housing development while maintaining community character and natural resources is a win for everyone,” commented Janice Scherer. “We will work together to create beautiful places that will benefit our communities, and that is something to be proud of.”

“Enacting the Community Housing Fund Overlay District will allow the projects that have been funded through the Community Housing Fund to move forward and to create the workforce housing our residents overwhelmingly supported when they approved the CHF Fund,” added Kara Bak, Director of Housing and Community Services.  “This overlay district is the tool we need to deliver the homes to sustain our Town and support the people who keep our community running.”

On December 10, Governor Hochul announced the award of more than $32 million to help local governments enhance safety on their roads by reducing instances of vehicles inadvertently straying from their lanes and lessening the severity of crashes that result from those instances.  

The funding is part of the State Department of Transportation’s comprehensive “Safe System” approach toward zero highway deaths and will support roadway improvements – including new guide rails, signs, and pavement markings – in municipalities across the state. In New York State, 44 percent of crash fatalities occur when a vehicle departs from its lane. 

Of the $32M, Long Island is receiving $7M:

The Southampton Town Parks and Recreation Department, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program, the Noyac Civic Council, and members of the Pierson High School Environmental Club partnered this past Saturday, December 6, to plant beach grass at Foster Memorial Long Beach.  

“This is the fourth planting event we’ve had here since 2022,” said Kristen Doulos, Town Parks Director.  “The areas we first planted towards the south end of the facility have established well and are providing a robust vegetative buffer between the parking lot and beach.”  

The plants are catching and building up sand on the beach and are preventing it from blowing into the parking lot areas where it may become contaminated with things like glass and car fluids. In addition to planting, volunteers distributed “SEAd bombs,” a mix of clay, soil, and native seeds, into upland areas where they will bloom into a mix of annual and perennial pollinators and establish strong root systems to help prevent erosion.

At the November 25th Town Board Meeting, Councilmember Michael Iasilli was successful in passing Res. No. 2025-1429, lowering the speed limit from 30 to 25 on three roads of concern in the North Sea and Tuckahoe area. Many constituents have brought up concerns about traffic safety on Big Fresh Pond Road, Lake Side Drive, and Parrish Road in previous years.  

A study had been published in July 2023 as per Town Board determination in 2022. Some of the main recommendation include ‘enhanced signage and the lowering of the speed limit.’ Many areas of the road have significant curves making it difficult to respond if traveling at fast speeds. One alarming finding of the study stated, the accident data analysis found 19 crashes in the study area and on adjacent roadways (Nelson & Pope, 13). Though the crashes referenced were not fatal, it is what triggered the Board to take the recommendations seriously and act.  

“This is a great step forward in addressing traffic safety on these critical roadways. Not only does this legislation reduce the speed limit on these roads but also addresses some of the other key concerns outlined in the study’s recommendations. I want to commend Town Engineer Tom Houghton for his work on this and corresponding with the many constituents who urged the Town to examine the area,” commented Councilmember Iasilli.

Councilmember Bill Pell stated, “This is a great measure that makes the community safer. I am happy to support these efforts.” Supervisor Maria Moore also commented, “This showed us how our process can take shape in examining requests for speed limit changes, and will guide us in the future when additional requests come in.”

At the regular monthly meeting of the Southampton Town Fire Chiefs Council on November 20, 2025, a three-thousand-dollar donation was presented to East End Hospice’s Camp Good Grief program.

The Southampton Town Fire Chiefs Council is made up of chiefs and past-chiefs from all of the fire departments in the Town of Southampton. Riverhead Fire Department and Shelter Island Fire Department are also part of the Chiefs Council due to geographic proximity and a longstanding relationship of cooperation and assistance. The Council meets on a monthly basis to discuss issues of united concern and importance to all of the departments involved, to share information and maintain communications and camaraderie.

For two years now the Southampton Town Chiefs Council has been holding an annual golf outing to raise money to support the organization’s annual scholarships, awards and other activities.

This year the Council decided to also donate a portion of the golf outing proceeds to an identified organization in the Town that also provides a great service to the community. The Chiefs Council selected East End Hospice’s Camp Good Grief as the 2025 recipient organization. A check for $3,000.00 was presented to Lauren Weinclaski from East End Hospice last night at the Southampton Town Chiefs Council meeting.

“Most people are familiar with the exceptional services that East End Hospice provides to those in need,” said Southampton Chiefs Council President, Michael Tortorice. As another part of the amazing services offered by East End Hospice, Camp Good Grief is a free, bereavement day camp for children and teens who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Tortorice, joined by Golf Outing Chairman Ryan White, went on to say, “The Fire Service responds to emergencies everyday and provides people with help at some of their worst times. We are all part of this community too though and recognize that people, and children in particular, experience losses all the time that we, as firefighters, simply cannot interrupt. In the same spirit of showing up during emergencies, we want to continue to show up for our community by supporting Camp Good Grief as a way to continue to help those in need.”

Lauren Weinclaski from East End Hospice was very appreciative to receive the donation on behalf of Camp Good Grief. She thanked the Chiefs Council for all that they do day in and day out to protect the community. A public education event, hosted by Southampton Village, will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2:00 - 3:30pm, at the Southampton Cultural Center. This event will address topics vital to all of us who live here: the quality of our water and the condition of our ponds and lake.

A panel of experts and elected officials will educate residents and answer questions:

• Dr. Gobler (Stony Brook University) will cover the current state of Southampton Village's water bodies and explain how wastewater from our septic systems is leaching nitrogen into the groundwater. He will detail how this nitrogen provides "rocket fuel" to the algal blooms that plague our waters every summer.
• Tom Varley (Center for Clean Water Technology) will cover the new low-nitrogen septic options, explaining the process from start to finish. More importantly, he will discuss the tax-free grant money that, in most cases, will cover the entire cost of replacing your system, plus any damage to your landscaping.
• Ann Welker (Suffolk County Legislator) will moderate a panel discussion, answering questions submitted by the audience.

Resources and Next Steps:

• The two most popular low-nitrogen systems (Hydro-Action and Fuji Clean) will be on display on the street in front of the SCC.
• The lobby will host additional free resources to help you fill out the grant application or schedule a future appointment for assistance.

Shinnecock Canal Maritime Park now has a new attraction for the local community, according to Southampton Town Parks and Recreation officials. 

After several months of planning, a ribbon cutting for the opening of a new fitness path and exercise equipment circuit will be held on Tuesday, November 25 at 3:00pm.  

Funding for this project was provided through a combination of Community Development Block Grant funding and Town Board appropriations. Parks Department and Housing & Community Development personnel have “worked diligently to bring funding to qualifying projects like this, and many others,” they reported. 

In the Town’s pursuit to offer more inclusive and ADA compliant facilities, the new exercise equipment that flanks the fitness path is designed to include people with special needs and disabilities. The path and equipment will be open for public use at no charge. While the walking path is open to all ages, users must be at least 14 years old, or have adult supervision to use the equipment. “This will be a wonderful asset for our community,” stated Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara stated. “It provides accessible, outdoor space for community members of all ages and abilities to stay active, regardless of whether they can afford a gym membership. This initiative truly supports the health and well-being of our residents, and I’m really excited to see this come to fruition.” 

The fitness path itself is one-sixth of a mile long with seven stations offering the following exercise units:

• Recumbent Bike
• 4-Person Leg Press
• 2-Person Accessible Chest Press
• Balance Steps
• 4-Person Lower Body Combo
• Two- Person Air Walker
• 2-Person Pull-Up Station

Each station provides soft cushion surfacing and an amazing view of the Shinnecock Canal. The Maritime Park is open from dawn to dusk and located adjacent to the Parks and Recreation administration offices at 6 Newtown Road in Hampton Bays. 

“The project is a perfect next step to the improvements made at the facility a couple of years ago when we installed a paved parking lot, ADA sidewalks, and a covered pavilion,” said Town Parks Director Kristen Doulos. “We wanted to provide a healthy space that encourages people to get outside and get moving, while still fully maintaining open vistas to the park and canal.” 

The Parks Department also plans to provide instructional exercise and training programs to residents for a small fee. Those programs will be featured on the Town’s website soon.  Please check the Recreation Programs Registration online for more details at www.southamptontownny.gov/parks. 

As a courtesy, the Parks Department will also hold a free 45-minute introduction on December 2 at 12pm. Participants must register online prior to event.

Southampton, NY — At the Wednesday, November 12 Board Meeting, the Town of Southampton Board approved three critically important resolutions to provide assistance to residents impacted by recent reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The resolutions are designed to address food insecurity and strengthen local support networks through the following measures:

1. Direct Meal Assistance – Providing direct meal assistance to all seniors experiencing food insecurity.
2. Community Partnership Support – Allocating funds to assist the Long Island Community Foundation in its Feed the Need program.
3. Emergency Aid to School Districts – Offering emergency assistance to local school districts serving families affected by the SNAP cuts.

Town of Southampton, NY November 6, 2025 — The Town of Southampton joined representatives from the County, State and other Townships in recognizing life-saving CPR efforts that took place this year.

EMS personnel from Hampton Bays Ambulance, Southampton Volunteer Ambulance and Westhampton Ambulance, along with police officers and town dispatchers, were recognized this past weekend at the Suffolk County Regional EMS Council 2025 CPR Save Awards ceremony, which took place at South Country Ambulance Company’s Headquarters. Twenty-one individuals from Southampton were recognized for their efforts in successfully utilizing CPR skills to save a life during this past year.

Representatives from Southampton Town, New York State, Suffolk County and throughout the region were joined by survivors, family members and other invited guests to celebrate the individuals and EMS teams being recognized for their successful life-saving efforts. Each individual who played a role in the successful CPR save was issued commendations and proclamations as the circumstances of each emergency call was read off to the packed house in attendance.

Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker was in attendance and took a moment to address the crowd, saying that, “We are so proud of the daily efforts of all of our EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers and other emergency responders. I am honored to be here today to recognize their life-saving contributions to our communities. We owe each and every one of you a tremendous debt of gratitude for your dedication and heroism. Because of your actions, people, some in this very room, are alive and well today. ”

In also reflecting on the ceremony and contributions of those being recognized, Southampton Town Director of Public Safety Ryan Murphy echoed Legislator Welker’s sentiments in saying, “The Town of Southampton is proud to be able to recognize the successful CPR efforts of all those here today, but we also want to thank all of our volunteer and paid EMS staff throughout the Town and County for their daily efforts. From using CPR to save a life to assisting someone who had a slip and fall, our dedicated first responders provide help and life saving aid to those in need and positively alter their future. ” Murphy went on to also call out the efforts of the Town 911 dispatchers in saying, “Our dispatchers are behind-the-scene heroes as well. They are a key piece of the chain of survival. They get the emergency services to those in need and provide valuable life-saving direction while emergency services are en route. We are thankful for their service to the residents and visitors of the Town of Southampton.”

On Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Town of Southampton Disability Advisory Taskforce hosted its Second Annual Resource Fair from Noon- 3:00 PM at the Hampton Bays Community Center.

The Town is pleased to announce this event drew approximately 70 individuals. Among them were families and caregivers from across the East End area, including the North Fork and Brookhaven, who came to learn more about a wide range of services, programs, and support networks dedicated to children and adults with special needs, with over a dozen informational tables hosted by local organizations, advocacy groups, and state providers.

From Noon – 1 PM, the event started with a welcoming message by Councilmember Michael Iasilli. “Local government can act as an intermediary between residents seeking assistance and the spate of services that are available here in Southampton. It can be overwhelming at times for families, but that is why the Town’s Disability Taskforce does this work,” he said.

Two seminar presentations were offered, one by the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), offering insights into their programs and application process, supports and services. The other was presented by Self-Initiated Living Options (SILO) titled “The review and development of documentation to support eligibility with OPWDD and the Social security Administration for SSI.” Both organizations play a critical role in supporting and promoting the rights of local individuals with disabilities on a state and federal level.

Thanks to Hampton Bays School District Superintendent Lars Clemensen, the High School sent volunteer students to help attendees with bilingual services and informational assistance. Some of which included information about the participating organizations, Braille cards, and the Town’s Resource Guide published last year (in both Spanish and English). The Town of Southampton Disability Taskforce continues to remain committed to enhance quality of life for Southampton Town residents and visitors seeking special needs services and this is just one of the many ways the Town is supporting the community.

Councilmember Iasilli added, “the muscle behind this event truly is Jamie Bowden, our Town’s Community Organization specialist, who works tirelessly to organize this event, ensuring we get helpful organizations that can make a difference in people’s lives.” Next year, the Town looks forward to expanding its efforts by welcoming even more participants with the aim of becoming a cornerstone event for Southampton residents. Southampton Town Awarded $19 Million for Riverside Wastewater Treatment System Project

Federal Funds to Help Water Quality & Sustainable Development

Southampton Town’s plan for a revitalized Riverside has reached a critical funding milestone as Supervisor Maria Moore announced today the award of a $19 million federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grant for the construction of a new wastewater collection system and treatment system in the hamlet of Riverside. The funding was approved on October 30, 2025 by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) as part of a statewide $135 million initiative to support critical water infrastructure projects.

Supervisor Moore expressed gratitude for the State’s partnership in delivering this transformative investment. “This award from EFC will allow the Town to proceed with this critical infrastructure project that will enhance water quality by removing thousands of pounds of nitrogen from our waterways each year and will aid in revitalizing the Riverside community,” said Supervisor Moore. “We are deeply grateful to Governor Hochul and the Environmental Facilities Corporation for their continued support and commitment to safeguarding Long Island’s sole source aquifer, the Peconic Estuary, and other vital water bodies.”

The EFC award builds upon the $5 million grant that was awarded to the Town last month through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Community Grants program. Through the co-sponsorship of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the funding was approved by Congress as one of 715 water infrastructure projects totaling $1.47 billion under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.

The Riverside Wastewater Treatment System Project represents a major step forward in the Town’s long-term strategy to improve water quality, promote sustainable development, and revitalize one of its most economically challenged hamlets. The new system will replace outdated and insufficient septic infrastructure with a modern, environmentally sound treatment facility designed to protect groundwater and surface waters throughout the Peconic Bay system.

Supervisor Moore commended the Town’s Department of Land Management, led by Planning and Development Administrator Janice Scherer, for its dedication in identifying and pursuing federal, state and local funding opportunities for this project. “Janice Scherer and her team have been relentless in their pursuit of funding for this initiative,” Supervisor Moore said. “Their diligence and expertise have been instrumental in positioning Southampton to receive this historic level of investment.”

The Supervisor also recognized the Southampton Town Board for its continued support and leadership in advancing the project. “This project has been a true team effort,” Moore added. “The Town Board’s consistent commitment to improving water quality and infrastructure has laid the groundwork for this success.” 

 The Riverside wastewater project aligns with New York State’s broader clean water infrastructure goals under Governor Hochul’s leadership, which include leveraging federal IIJA funding to strengthen local economies, reduce nitrogen pollution, and ensure clean, safe water for future generations.

Moody's Re-Affirms Southampton Town's Aaa Credit Rating

Moody's, in its investor report dated October 3, 2025, reaffirmed the Town of Southampton's Aaa rating, the highest rating issued by the investment service, and specifically noted particularly the Town's:

• Ample reserves and liquidity
• Manageable debt burden
• Strong fiscal management and conservative budgeting
• Strong local economy

The report follows a presentation to the rating agency by Town Supervisor Maria Moore and Comptroller Dorothy Godlewski on September 24, and marks the tenth consecutive year of this highest achievement for the Town from various credit agencies. The Aaa rating will afford the Town a very favorable interest rate when it goes to the financial markets to fund $12,065,000 in 2025 capital projects.

The Moody's report praised Southampton Town's strong financial position and noted that "conservative budgeting and sound fiscal management has led the town to maintaining very stable reserves and liquidity over the past five years."

Supervisor Moore noted, "Moody's continues to recognize the strong fiscal management and conservative budgeting practices of this administration. I am so proud that the policies and practices put into place over the years by our financial management team, with the support of the Town Board, have enabled us to maintain the highest level of financial achievement."

"We continue to budget and to forecast revenues conservatively. Moody's report confirms the value of these sound financial practices," added Comptroller Dorothy Godlewski.

Today, in recognition of National Substance Use Prevention Month, HUGS and SAFE in Southampton teamed up with Hampton Coffee Company to launch the “Coffee Break Campaign” at Hampton Coffee Company in Hampton Bays and Westhampton Beach.  Throughout the month of October, medium-sized hot coffee drinks will be served in cups with positive and uplifting messages that can be shared on social media.

Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, liaison to SAFE in Southampton, attended the event and stated, “This campaign is part of an ongoing commitment to building a healthier community.  Through initiatives like this, we can promote mental wellness and support one another through positive messaging.”

Approximately twenty local skaters came out for a meeting held at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays this past Wednesday to get the first glimpse at plans for a major renovation of the skate park at the facility.  Engineering firm L.K. McLean Associates and Platform Group, a firm that specializes in the design of one-of-a-kind custom skate parks, presented two conceptual designs. Both options featured concrete surfaces but had variations on elements like bowl shapes, street course layouts, and types of obstacles.

“The participants at the meeting were very enthusiastic about the designs, and provided some great ideas and feedback,” said Councilman Rick Martel. “We also hope that anyone else who is interested will take the survey so we can hone in on as many wants and needs as possible.”

Conceptual designs for the skate park and a brief survey can be found at www.southamptontownny.gov/survey.  The deadline for survey submissions will be Wednesday, October 15.  

The project is being funded by the Southampton Town Board’s appropriation of $1.25 million in the 2025 capital budget, and is being managed by the Parks & Recreation Department. The construction of the new park is anticipated to be completed by fall of 2026.

From Monday, September 29th through Friday, October 3rd, between 9PM and 4AM, we will be conducting necessary Sperry Rail Testing on the Montauk Branch. During this time, bus service will replace trains between Babylon and Montauk.

The last trains to operate before the service change will be the 8:36PM from Babylon and the 9:07PM from Speonk. Regular train service will resume with the 4:10AM departure from Speonk.

To support this critical work, buses will operate in three travel zones, making all local stops within each zone and running non-stop to and from Babylon. Please note local travel between stops in different zones will not be possible during this time.

The travel zones are:

• Bay Shore through Patchogue
• Bellport through Southampton
• Bridgehampton through Montauk

Westbound buses will depart earlier than regularly scheduled train times. For the most accurate bus departure times, we encourage commuters to use the TrainTime app or visit mta.info/schedules.

While this important work helps maintain the safety and reliability of our system, we understand that it may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding and patience.

On Monday, September 15, Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara and Town Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy attended a briefing session with LIRR President Rob Free on the possible LIRR strike. 

Although it appears that a strike at 12AM on Thursday, September 18, 2025 has been averted, we would like to take this opportunity to remind South Fork Commuter Connection riders to sign up for service updates on the Town’s Notify Me system to be alerted to any changes to service.

Union officials reached out to the White House requesting an Executive Order to form a Presidential Emergency Board to negotiate a settlement.  The strike is subject to the President signing the Executive Order.

As more information becomes available, the Town of Southampton is committed to sharing that information with our residents. In addition to checking the information from the MTA on the website www.mta.info/lirrstrike, you can also stay tuned to all Southampton Town social media platforms and the website for any important notices or information about this situation.

On Tuesday, September 9, at the Southampton Town Board Meeting, the Town Board voted unanimously on a resolution sponsored by Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, liaison to the Addiction and Recovery/Behavioral Health Committee, designating September 2025 as National Recovery Month in the Town of Southampton.

Represented by the color purple, National Recovery Month shines a purple light on recovery and raises awareness of substance abuse disorders. Some of the Town’s most famous landmarks will be lit in purple, including the cupola at the top of Town Hall on Hampton Road, the Big Duck on Flanders Road, and the Dix Windmill in Westhampton Beach.

“We’ve all been affected by addiction. No one is immune,” said Councilwoman McNamara. “By shining a purple light on some of the most prominent landmarks throughout the Town, we’re continuing to raise awareness and remove the stigma around addiction and mental health disorders.”

Kym Laube, Executive Director of Human Understanding and Growth Services, Inc. (HUGS, Inc.) stated, “Mental health and substance use disorders touch every community across our nation. There are families and individuals who struggle right in our Town.  Wearing purple, highlighting Recovery Month, lets them know there is hope  With the right commitment and support, individuals and families can begin a journey toward healing, improved health, and contribute positively to the community.”  She emphasized, “Recovery is not only possible—it happens every single day, including in the Town of Southampton.”

This month-long initiative is supported by SAFE in Southampton, its members and member organizations, including the Southampton Town Police Department, Human Understanding & Growth Services, (HUGS Inc.), Long Island Addiction Resource Center (LIARC), Hampton Bays Schools, Hampton Coffee Company, the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, SAFE in Sag Harbor, and other community members. 

National Recovery Month was established in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. It also celebrates the nation’s vibrant recovery community and honors all those who help make recovery possible. 

Town of Southampton, NY September 8, 2025 — The Town of Southampton Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management placed 343 flags in the ground in front of their facility in Hampton Bays in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Staff from the Southampton Town Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management took time this morning to place flags in the lawn in front of their facility to recognize and remember the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001 343 FDNY firefighters, 63 law enforcement officers and thousands of civilians lost their lives in the attack. Since September 11, 2001, countless more individuals have suffered and perished from 9-11 related illnesses as well.

Many of the fire departments in the Town of Southampton, and throughout the region, will also be sounding their horns and sirens at times between 8:46AM and 10:28AM to mark the times at which the towers were struck and fell, as well as the times that the Pentagon was struck and the time that Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This effort in the Town to sound the horns and sirens is being coordinated locally through the Southampton Town Fire Chiefs Council.

“The Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management asks everyone to take a moment to remember all of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001,” said Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy. “We remember all those who lost their lives that day just going to work as normal and all those who gave their lives in an attempt to help and rescue individuals in the Towers. It is also important to reflect and renew the spirit of our country and our communities when we recall how we pulled together in response to this horrible event in our history,” Murphy said.

The Southampton Town Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management includes the Fire Marshal’s Office, the Division of Code Enforcement, Animal Control, Emergency Preparedness and the Town Litter Crew. Members of all divisions and office staff participate in this memorial effort annually. This is the fourth year that The Department has placed the flags out in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

In order to remind the community of the licensing process and ensure the safety of our pets and fellow neighbors, Councilmember Iasilli, along with Clerk Sundy Schermeyer and Public Safety Director Ryan Murphy, will be collaborating with the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s volunteers and Humane Long Island to host a pet vaccination and licensing event.

** The event will kick off with a short press conference to highlight the event’s importance. This event will be free of cost and will provide a meaningful opportunity for residents to safeguard and properly license their furry companions. We encourage local residents to participate in this meaningful initiative as attendees will learn more about the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s mission, explore opportunities to adopt or foster a pet in need, while also exploring the importance of safeguarding our pets and how it contributes to a healthier, safer Town.

Beach Staffing to Start New Post-Labor Day Schedule

Southampton Town Parks and Recreation officials have announced an enhanced safety schedule for Ponquogue Beach for this weekend and next.

Starting tomorrow, for September 6 and 7, lifeguard staff will supervise Ponquogue Beach in Hampton Bays from approximately 10am to 5pm.  The bonus coverage will continue next weekend, on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14.

At the August 26, 2025, Town Board Meeting, the Southampton Town Board voted unanimously on legislation put forth by Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara and co-sponsored by Supervisor Maria Moore and Councilman Rick Martel, establishing the East Quogue Park District. 

After several informal meetings within the hamlet, community leaders in East Quogue presented their plan to establish a Park District in East Quogue at a Town Board Work Session on June 5. The plan presented was to fund and facilitate certain improvements to downtown East Quogue, such as replacing trees on Main Street with native species, improving the East Quogue Village Green, as well as maintaining hanging baskets and urns along Main Street. Additionally, the Park District would fund seasonal lighting and decorations, and ongoing maintenance for the East Quogue Post Office garden and the native plant garden at the Bay Street Marina.

“I would like to thank the community members who brought this forward and made the residents aware of the proposal,” said Councilwoman McNamara. “Our Parks Department does a great job, but the community wanted more in terms of beautification. I think this will be great for East Quogue.”

The initiative had widespread support from the East Quogue Civic Association, the Beautification Committee, the Citizens Advisory Committee, and the Chamber of Commerce, and the Historical Society. 

The maximum amount proposed to be expended for the improvements is $75,000 and would be funded by the taxpayers who live within the District, at an estimated cost of $22.80 per year for a property assessed at $700,000. 

Together with the Parks Department and the Town Board, a Parks District Advisory Committee will help manage the District projects. The Advisory Committee will be comprised of a member of the Town Board, as well as members of various East Quogue community organizations, similar to the Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays and Water Mill Park Districts.

On August 24, 1995, 30 years ago, Long Island firefighters were battling the largest wildfire to ever impact our community and fire of historical significance in the State of New York. We take a moment to remember the tremendous efforts and courage shown by the volunteer firefighters of the Town of Southampton and firefighters throughout the rest of Long Island. Firefighters worked tirelessly for many days to gain control of the wildfires. By the conclusion of the efforts, more than 5,000 acres of Pine Barrens had burned. On behalf of the Town of Southampton we thank all our volunteer firefighters for their work in the 1995 Sunrise Fire and their selfless, ongoing efforts to protect our community every day.

We also take a moment to remember the need to care for our fragile ecosystem and to practice wildland fire safety.

• Remember to follow local and state regulations with regard to recreational fire safety and any temporary restrictions due to weather conditions.
• Practice camping fire safety and always make sure to never leave a fire unattended and drown outdoor fires with water when you are done with them.
• Create and maintain defensible space clear from brush immediately around your home.
• Develop an evacuation plan for fires and other emergencies.
• Carry out what you carry into any park, beach or nature space. Do not add foreign fuels to the environment that can contribute to the wildfire hazard.

The U.S. Council of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM-USA) announced the inaugural National Emergency Management Awareness Month, to be observed throughout August 2025. This initiative is intended to promote the field of emergency management. By engaging and educating the public about emergency management, National Emergency Management Awareness Month will help to build a deeper understanding of the profession and highlight the critical role emergency managers play in safeguarding communities and organizations.

Emergency management is a field that focuses on mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters and emergencies. Emergency managers develop plans for communities, evaluate risks, educate the public and coordinate preparedness, response and recovery operations that often involve many different agencies across many different disciplines.

“The Town’s first obligation is public safety, and our team is skilled at managing information and communications, creating order from chaos,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore. Moore also indicated that, “The Town of Southampton has prioritized emergency management over the years by creating the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management. We are proud to have a nationally accredited emergency manager and a very active presence in the emergency management community.”

Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, who serves as Town Board liaison to the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management said, “I have witnessed our Town Emergency Manager, Ryan Murphy, and his staff skillfully and professionally respond to, and provide guidance during many emergencies since I have joined the Board. The coordination and relationship that exists between our Town Emergency Management Office and our Police Department, the local Fire and EMS agencies, the hospitals and our partners in the Villages, neighboring Towns, County, and State are second to none and have greatly enhanced our preparedness capabilities.”

Town Emergency Manager Ryan Murphy said, “Whether we are responding to COVID, flooding or wildfires, preparing for large-scale international events like the U.S. Open or Hampton Classic, monitoring storm development during Atlantic Hurricane Season, or participating in public preparedness presentations, there is always something being done from an emergency management perspective in the Town.”
