To coincide with National Adopt a Pet Day, Councilmember Michael Iasilli put forth a resolution, unanimously approved by the Town Board, to designate April 30th as Adopt a Pet Day in the Town of Southampton.
Noting the important work of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, which operates as a 501 (c)3, the Councilmember found it to be important that the Town do more to highlight the contributions of the shelter’s staff and volunteers as well as encourage pet adoption in the community.
The Animal Shelter is a no kill shelter and has open admission. Likewise, the shelter does have affordable veterinary care available for all. Mondays and Fridays, they provide wellness exams, and Tuesdays they provide spay and neuter procedures. Additional services include microchipping, inoculations, and behavioral classes.
The legislation aims to facilitate local education and encourage residents that may be considering buying a pet for their family to adopt. Councilmember Iasilli stated, “In addition to affordable veterinary care at the shelter, people should know these precious animals need families. Adoption is a rewarding and compassionate option. I applaud Beatrix Parash, interim Executive Director, and all the staff and volunteers for taking such good care of our animals who need homes.”
