Town of Southampton, NY August 22, 2024 — The Town of Southampton Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management recently partnered with the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services to enhance preparedness and emergency response capabilities for the Town.
Throughout the month of July, Emergency Management staff from Southampton Town and Suffolk County worked to sign-up seniors in Southampton Town for Smart911 and emergency notifications. The Emergency Management staff visited the different community centers in the Town and spent lunch times providing information and assisting seniors to register for emergency notifications via the County Smart911 system. More than 60 seniors throughout the Town were added into the emergency notification system to be better connected to information and alerts in the event of emergencies and disasters. Town Emergency Manager Ryan Murphy said, “I’m pleased to be able to team up with some of my former colleagues at Suffolk County OEM to increase our emergency notification capabilities to this important Town resident population.”
The Town of Southampton Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Response Team also recently teamed up with Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services. Two Suffolk County Fire Marshals from the County’s Decontamination (Decon) Strike Team were temporarily assigned to the Southampton HazMat for a deployment to standby in response to a high profile visit to the Town. These two County Fire Marshals seamlessly integrated into the Town’s team and helped to supplement staff for a visit that involved the Secret Service. “The additional staff from the County allowed us to be better prepared to handle any possible incidents that might come up if the HazMat Team had to jump into action,” Murphy said.
Following that standby deployment, the Town HazMat Team once again partnered with the Suffolk County Decon Strike Team for a combined training and equipment show-and-tell in Hampton Bays. Equipment form both the Town and County was put on display for all of the different members of both teams to gain a better orientation and understanding of capabilities and functions. This combined training will enhance cooperative response efforts and allow both teams to serve as force multipliers for each other at different incidents.
When speaking about the recent cooperative efforts, Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore said, “I’m pleased to see our Town staff from the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management working with the County in this manner. I fully support any opportunities where we can cooperate and collaborate between jurisdictions to enhance services for our residents and emergency response capabilities.”
