On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, representatives from UnionDerm (the sponsor of the program), and the Parks and Recreation Department cut the ribbon for the Town’s free SPF 30 sunscreen program. The initiative, which began in 2019, when Creative Advertising Concepts (CAC) worked with former Councilwoman Christine Scalera to find a sponsor free sunscreen dispensers throughout the Town.
The program provides free SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect our residents and visitors against the dangers of sun exposure, and allows everyone to safely enjoy our beautiful beaches, parks and recreational facilities all summer long.
“I would like to thank UnionDerm for sponsoring sunscreen dispensers at our beaches, parks and recreational facilities,” stated Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, the Town Board liaison to the Parks Department. “When I was putting this program together, I got a call from a friend of mine who was just diagnosed with melanoma, so it really hit home for me. It’s a great partnership for our residents; they can be safe and have fun in the sun without the dangers of sun exposure.”
“We as dermatologists want everyone to enjoy the great outdoors, just do it safely,” stated Dr. Tatyana Petukhova of UnionDerm. “In addition to wearing hats and sun protective clothing, exposed skin should have sunscreen. This is exactly the sunscreen you want to use, SPF 30 broad-spectrum, and reapply it frequently, at least every two hours. Hopefully, everyone will have a fun, sunburn free summer.”
Currently the free SPF 30 sunscreen dispensers are available through Labor Day at 13 of the Towns parks and beaches. For more information on the locations, please visit the Parks and Recreation Department page on the Towns website at https://www.southamptontownny.gov/353/Parks-Recreation
